Getting Started
How do I get started in the martial arts?
One of the most common questions we get!
If you are new to karate, like many are, this may help:
Step One: First, make sure you check out all your options.
Make sure you check out all your options in the area. Call and visit every school within a reasonable distance for you to drive to regularly. You are in luck! There are some very good schools in Livingston County despite the number of schools actually being very small. So your search will not take long. It's not a question of whether one school is better than the other, or even the style of martial arts, the real question is which one is the best fit for you and your child.
Step Two: Second, understand our two-step process to help you decide if this is the right thing for your and your family.
After contacting us and getting your questions answered your next step is to decide if you are ready for the “Initial Evaluation”.
Let me share with you are little bit more about how it works here. Since most parents in this area know little about the martial arts we have a well designed two step process that starts with a private evaluation session with me. In the evaluation we have three additional objectives. First, we want to make sure your child is ready for karate. This along with understanding their strengths and weaknesses. Second, we want to make sure and place them in the right level classes. Every child is different. But third, and most important, we want to make sure you understand everything about our school because we are going to ask a lot of your child and even more of you. This will be hard. So we do not want you to start here unless you are absolutely sure this is the right place for you and you are ready to put in the work. We want to make sure we set up your child for success from the very start. Does that make sense?
The second step is a trial class. As a matter of fact I will not even let you make a decision until you have completed both.
